well it’s sad, but that’s what you get for firing all your experienced workers and settle for useless clarks. Best Buy would be in that situation as well if they didn’t advertise and get the best products as well, their associates are dumb as a rock
That’s what happens when consumers can find better prices elsewhere and/or consumers aren’t buying as much.
i’m pretty upset about it. i would always go their (even though theirs a best buy, radio shack, and hh-greg nearby). the prices their weren’t as high as best buys and they had a nice wide variety of murchandise. also, since im going to be looking at getting a job soon (im 15) i was planning on trying to get one their….so much for that. and yes i agree with you that now best buy will probably jack up their prices and be even mre crowded :(. well anyways i guess we cant do much now although it would be awesome if obama was to bail them out :). i didnt really like him but if he was to do that he might just be my new favorite president :). farewell old circuit city :’(
I only used Circuit City when I needed a deal. I’m sad to see it go, but it was a crappy company anyways. As many have said, it’s demise was inevitable.
This will continue to happen with other businesses I think. If not in 2009, it will eventually when jobs continue to decrease and people spend less and less money. The govt can’t continue to throw money at the problem and hope it gets better. Let’s face it, western society as we know it has basically become people running around buying and selling stuff to eacho other. i think we need something new. I hope this is just the beginning. Sounds bad, but this has to happen in order to get people to wake up. Enjoy your crap while you can.
The good part is the close out deals i think but other than that i don’t use any of those stores like best buy and circuit city i shop in china for exclusive stuff ( well my dad dose) but im sure there would be another store just like it to replace circuit city maybe even better!
I really liked Circuit City’s price match guarantee so I’m sad. Yet, there is always Fry’s Electronics next to Best Buy to kick their butts so yay.
I’m bummed about Circuit City going out of business also, mostly for sentimental reasons. But I did find them to have competitive prices as well as good staff in my city. And in the past I’ve read plenty of complaints about BB’s staff. I think it depends on the particular location. But even if the staff and layout/cleanliness was horrible in each location, what matters most to me is what they sell and what their prices are.
Given the competition from online retailers and the economic environment, it’s doubtful that brick & mortar retailers will raise prices.
Keeping prices down and driving them even lower isn’t as good as you think it is. Unfortunately, most consumers don’t quite understand the dynamics of the economy. No, I’m not an expert either but I do know this:
We’re in a downward spiral. Because people are concerned about the economy and what the future holds for their employment, they have been cutting back on buying. Well, by doing that they are contributing to the poor state of the economy as retailers, wholesalers and manufacturer’s will have to lay people off or close shop. Those lost jobs, and the lost purchasing power those people have, will come back to haunt those people who stopped spending and caused those job losses. Also, the lower the prices are the less profit companies make. Again, that leads to job losses.
If you want the economy to get better you need to keep spending money! It’s really that simple. Keeping your wallet shut or waiting for deep discounts will make matters worse.
I mostly shop at Best Buy. I’m surprised Best Buy didn’t try to take over Circuit City. Maybe that would give them a monopoly on the industry?
It’s so sad! Even though I prefer to buy electronics from Best Buy, I still liked the store. The prices there weren’t so bad either.
R.I.P. Circuit City
The CC by my house was always clean, but there seemed to by 5 employees for every person shopping there. That’s not a way to make a profit, nor is the fact that those hordes of employees knew nothing about what they were selling. Circuit City fired every knowledgeable employee and hired ones who knew nothing (no offense to anyone who worked there, you may have known your stuff). They only looked at the short term profit, ignoring that fact that they were dooming the company.
I doubt BB and other retailers will jack up prices. First of all, the economy is so bad that people would just stop shopping there even if they were the only electronics store left (which they are not). Secondly there are still a few other retailers (Best Buy, Fry’s, Walmart, Costco, Radio Shack) plus online stores, so the competition is still there.
It’s scaring me to be honest. I agree with what you said about Best Buy raising its prices. Also, Amazon and Ebay are going to be profiting as well since a lot of people are buying online rather than going to the store. I think the worst part is that there will be like 34,000 (more or less) employees that will be unemployed.
It’s terrifying to think what will happen next.
i know your mostly worried about increases in prices, but comon, circuit city has been out of the competition for years. This has been predicted, for a long time. Think about it, whenever you step into circuit city (unless its december) its flatout empty, and usually very dirty. Step into best buy, and its nearly always got tons of people in it. But dont worry about prices, with the economy the way it is, best buy would be foolish to change anything.
For me and my family, it’s more personal. My husband is the Ops Manager at a CC and is a very dedicated employee who expects his employees to be very knowledgeable and friendly. For all of the horror stories that people post about CC, just remember that there are people out there that had excellent CC experiences and although this will have a negative impact on our already declining economy, the impact on the employees and their families will be even greater.
I am sad to see Circuit City go but also Glad. Circuit City has been getting worse and worse as the years have gone on. They are only obsessed with profit and forgot about us, The customer!! At least Best Buy is still doing well! They are a much better store anyways. They actually care about us as the customer. There staff is trained a lot better than CC’s was. Im shopping at Best BUY! BTW - Dont support walmart. They are a huge reason why we are in this economic crisis. Walmart opened up new stores everwhere putting locally owned business out of business and hurting other Retail chains like CC. So dont shop at walmart go with Best Buy or Smiths market place or Target. Lets support all the other retail stores and prevent the take over of WALMART!
My husband has been employed there for 10 years. This is very hard on our family. Not all CC stores had problems. I find it hard to swallow that people that do not work there or know anyone that works there seem to have all of the answers and be gurus on the subject. Not all employees were uninformed on products. We have personally never had a positive experience (recruiting for employees) in BB. You people would not believe how many employees bounce back & forth from CC to BB. I will never buy anything from them. I am part of the CC family. CC used gray paint in the stores vs. BB bright colors. So of course it looks dirty. It depends on the location. Some were new stores and some had not begun the remodel. If this was the company you work for I bet you would not say Yeah…So Long…It was about time they closed… blah blah blah. Why are so many people happy that the economy is getting worse and there is going to be more people looking for jobs and on unemployment? I do not see the humor in the situation at all. I wish all of the CC employees and their families good luck for the future.
I agree with BestAnswerGuy. I really liked CC and my local one wasn’t dirty or anything (and I didn’t experience the other complaints). But CC has a lot of sentimental value for me, much more than the fact they are cheaper than best buy
Well, they did do this to themselves and now unfortunately 34,000 employees are out of work. With the history of being owned by Marcos (the Philippine dictator the US supported) in the 80’s, selling some used items in the early 90’s, and the ever popular of bad management = bad employees. It was bound to happen, especially in a depression that the US is going into.
For those that complain about bad customer service, well this happens at every chain store in time. When you start seeing managers or supervisors that hire their friends, well, you know the store is headed downhill.
I’ve been disappointed with Circuit City too many times to be surprised that they are going out of business. Best Buy is a much, much better store and the prices are better. I disagree that Best Buy will raise prices, they still have a lot of competition from Fry’s, Walmart, Target, etc. Besides raising prices is what caused Circuit City to collapse, I don’t think Best Buy want to follow Circuit City’s lead.
Waldorf MD branch was clean nice and positioned aggressively across a bestbuy. i am not going to lie, i just found bestbuy to be more “fun” to shop at. if your going to spend a decent amount of money shouldnt you feel somewhat entertained by the experience. I do think that circuit city could have improved their marketing strategy. its sad that its closing down because more people will be unemployed making more competition for employment opportunities. I’m afraid of what impact this has that the public doesnt know about. I hope Obama will prove to be a good president and fix this. i hope he wont be just a symbol
I think Circuit City’s closing is another blow to the economy (30,000 jobs) and for consumers, competitive pricing wise.
When I shop electronics, customer service and store layout are not my primary concern. My primary concern is the price and the store with the best price will earn my business. Many times that store was Circuit City for me. On top of that I never had a bad experience at Circuit City. In fact the two locations I have been to the most (Sacramento and San Jose) were clean stores with decent service. On multiple occasions either the incompetence or price at Best Buy led me to Circuit City.
Obviously Circuit City made a series of mistakes that lead to their closing. But they definitely put up a fight until the very end. Unfortunately it was too late.
I never really shopped at Circuit City, but hearing this news definitely shocked me a bit. My dad told me and I couldnt believe it, and I just went on their website yesterday, and it said it was closed, after 60 years! I felt very sad because 60 years was alot and seeing them close was so saddening, because it will greatly affect the economy. More people losing jobs, less competition, etc. And I feel so bad for those employers ):
hah, this place was doomed since 2001, after they fired a bunch of associates and took away commisions. Good Riddance
Im a current Circuit City Store Director. I’ve been with this great company since 98. This has been a great company for me and alot of loyal guest’s. Phil Schoonover and his shitty Besy Buy ways ruined us. I think it was a huge retail conspiracy for him to shut us down. Everyone knows our great company has been going downhill since 05. God Bless all the Employees that are losing jobs, and thank you for all our loyal customers that have employeed me for 10 years.
Store Manager
I worked there. It was a great place. Very underrated. I am very happy to have worked there.
Yeah i do agree that prices will go up at best buy. Circuit city was Best Buy’s greatest competitor so with less competition why wouldn’t a company put the price up. Also, there will be less places to price match.
Something that bothers me though is when people say something specific about Circuit City, like “Service is bad”, while they are probably telling the truth it totally depends on which store you visit. In one area, a best buy could have bad service and the circuit city next door could have better or vice versa. My Circuit City was right next to a Best Buy. And when I walked in there to redeem my gift card I got For Christmas, I got terrible service. It was like no one cared i was there. That wouldn’t have happened next door at Circuit City.
But yeah, Circuit City, great store. I will truly miss it and the environment it so warmly gave to me as an employee.
RIP Circuit City
The people that are saying that the prices at Best Buy will go up are the people who only shop at Circuit City.
Circuit City isn’t the only store that did price matching with its competitors. HELLO PPL—Best Buy has always done price matching too. I used to shop at both stores, but never got any help at CC. So this past Christmas season, I applied for a job at BB because my experiences THERE had been better, and I even accepted a part-time position AFTER the season just ended. We DO price match our competitors (hhgregg, target, walmart, bestbuy.com, CC, etc), so I don’t know what some of you are talking about.
Also, our prices aren’t going to raise. We still have some major competitors out there so things will stay the same.
However, I think it’s very sad about CC closing. It’s not right that all of their employees are going to be out of their jobs, and it really sucks.
Circuit City was a great place to get items cheaper compared to Best buy i’ll admit. However I like Best Buy a little more. Yes their prices are a little higher at times. I always disliked going into Circuit City for the fact that their employees seemed out in left field all the time. They were annoying and never knew what the heck was going on (well the one that is near me). This had happened several times i’ve gone not just once. Haha I remember going in there to buy a router. The EXACT same router was on the shelf but one box was different lookin’ from the other….and had a different price. The person at the counter was going to charge me the higher price…so i had to explain it was the exact same thing just the box cover was different. So it took like 4 ppl to figure that out b4 i could even buy the thing -_-…..
I am very satisfied with the products I bought from there i’ll admit. Where I live we do not have a Fry’s so Best Buy will be the main electronic store near me…even tho circuit city is directly across the street for the time being. Sad to seem’em go. Best of Luck to the employees of Circuit City!
i got an add out of the sunday paper and went there today to see how the going out of business sales looked. Most of the junk there was still higher priced than other big box stores, even with the discounts, and the computer I was looking at was marked up from the add and even with the discount the “liquidators” were selling it for more. I figured that my old puter would do me fine for another year, actually im gonna use it till it blows up.
