many other retailers have simalarly followed suit, Wal-mart. JCPenney, Kohls. Jus the stating list.
Will this send a message, People want experience customer service people and to be ethically treated right.
Paul
No they’ll just view it as the problem is paying the emloyee too much.
lol walmart has been doing this for years….and it doesnt seem to keep their parking lot empty…
I don’t get your point.
Circuit City goes bankrupt & they didn’t have employee benefits. And?
They probably would have went out of business sooner if they had paid benefits.
The companies who laid off full-timers did that to save money. But the economy got so bad, the effort was “too little, too late”.
More companies offering benefits have closed than those not offering benefits.
There is no message to be sent, as those two events are unrelated. Tech is hurting right now because of the economy, not because they don’t pay their workers benefits to do menial jobs.
Those other companies you listed are doing just fine. No one shops or doesn’t shop at a store based on how the employees are paid, or how long the customer service employees have been working there.
nope regan killed the unions and without a union you are just a number . and they know there is a lot of cheap mexican labor out there to be had. and they know the public will still patronise them so it is a win win game for businesses right now.
People need to be sold I guess and product knowledge is important . How is a minimum wage earner with no benefits going to find the will power to learn the product and sell it . No commission is offered ,they can not negotiate the price and offer a discount if you buy it right now and most of the time they simply do not care .
Circuit City went out of business because of their prices. often times they are overpriced and cannot compete with the market. It really has nothing to do with benefits. as the tech gets cheaper and newer circuit city was not willing to get rid of old stock at break even price thus they have held the items too long and in time this is what brought them down.
I’m with AL, but would also point out that Circuit City;s customer service was terrible in recent years, especially compared to Best Buy. I had to practically fight a salesmen to “let” me buy a TV without those stupid Monster cables. After that I decided I would never shop their again.
As someone who worked in retail for several years part time while working a full time job - a common thread emerged as I worked in Lord & Taylor, Barnes & Noble, MAC, Estee Lauder, Old Navy and Sephora (during long holiday seasons) - employees will ALWAYS complain!!!!
BUT - the more one is paid, the lesser the complaints. And - not surprisingly - the power struggles are much more blatant than in an office enviroment. Managers get more money and more perks - and they sometimes abuse their power for their own job security - problem is that everyone wants a managers job because they usually - MAKE MORE MONEY. Simple.
I mean - CC would sell a 1gb usb flash drive for $35, when Amazon would sell it to you for $14. How could CC compete?
Circuit City died because they sold too high and didn’t run good sales. Customer service was also a part of it - but I simply think that the enire economy is hurting simply because - well - how many phones, cameras, TVs, DVDs and PS3s can a family possibly want/need??
The saddest thing is that CC is liquidating - and I can’t think of something I really want to buy. It’s called oversaturation…
nah, circuit city probably went out because 1. their not keeping their stores fresh and exciting with as wide of variety of stuff or experience as best buy and other competitors. 2. pretty much circuit city lost their competitiveness and edge over their competitors. i believe its completely the greedy corporate managers that are to blame and no one else. farewell circuit city :’(
Do you really think they’re going out of business because they weren’t paying “benefits”? If that’s the case, you need to go back to school and pay attention this time.
